Ballymun Metro Hotel re-opens in Dublin almost two years after being gutted by fire

A Dublin hotel that was gutted by a fire in March 2018 is re-opening on Monday.

The Metro Hotel in Ballymun was forced to close after its 10th and 13th floors were damaged by a huge fire in March 2018.

A number of tenants who were living in apartments in the hotel building were also forced to find new homes as the building shut down for repair works, Dublin Live reports.

More than 60 Dublin Fire Brigade firefighters tackled the blaze with over 200 people, including hotel guests and apartment residents, evacuated from the building.

No injuries were reported following the incident, although the damage to the hotel building could be seen across the Dublin skyline for weeks afterwards.

The four-star location has had a €20 million upgrade and refurbishment, with 50 permanent staff expected to be employed when the hotel is fully operational.

Mark Williams, General Manager of the Metro Hotel Dublin Airport, said: “During the closure we reinstated and substantially improved our hotel and we are thrilled to announce a re-opening date of February 3, 2020.

"We very much look forward to opening our doors to returning and new customers and we are very pleased to be creating and supporting local jobs.

“As we look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead for the Metro Hotel and for the broader community, we must also acknowledge the support and best wishes received following the fire in 2018 and also our enormous relief that no one was injured, or worse.

"We are deeply grateful for the quick actions of our staff, the Fire Service and Gardai for ensuring a speedy and safe evacuation of all involved."
