Ballymun community 'heartbroken' after mum stabbed to death in latest 'senseless' tragedy

The Ballymun community is in a state of "shock" after a mum-of-two was stabbed to death in the latest of a series of "senseless tragedies".

The body of Lisa Thompson, 51, was found at her home in Sandyhill Gardens in Ballymun, North Dublin, at around 3.30pm yesterday.

Detectives are awaiting postmortem results but believe she may have been killed in a frenzied attack.

Gardai have launched a major murder probe after the mum-of-two was stabbed up to 12 times.

The local area has been hit by several tragic deaths in recent times.

Young Josh Dunne was fatally injured in a stabbing incident in East Wall on Dublin city’s northside in January. And in March, in neighbouring Finglas, mum-of-five Sandra Boyd was shot dead.

Councillors for the area told Dublin Live the Finglas and Ballymun community is "absolutely heartbroken" by these tragedies.

Social Democrats Councillor Mary Callaghan said: "The community is in a state of shock. It is also very, very sad as there has been quite a few tragedies over the last year. This seems to be just so senseless. These types of things don't need to happen and people are absolutely heartbroken."

She added: "My heart goes out to the children. It must have just been such an awful experience and the community no doubt will absolutely rally around the family and friends."

Sinn Fein Councillor Anthony Connaghan said the north west area of Dublin has been hit hard by a "lot of tragic deaths".

He said: "Everybody is shocked in the north west area. In the last few years there has been a lot of tragic deaths and obviously locals would be shocked and this is just adding to that with a mother of two children stabbed to death.

"It is a woman who is after losing her life and two children without a mother."
