Ballymoney fire: Firefighters remain at scene of major blaze as incident continues

Firefighters remain at the scene of a blaze at industrial premises in Ballymoney.

The fire at the premises previously known as Fleming Poultry on the Ballymena Road was treated as a major incident on Monday night, November 22.

The NIFRS say throughout the night, over 100 firefighters including nine officers, 15 fire appliances and ten specialist appliances fought to bring the fire under control.

On Tuesday, Group Commander Barry Ross added: "The incident is no longer being treated as a major incident however more than 30 Firefighters, including 4 Officers, 4 Fire Appliances, 2 Aerial Appliances and 1 High Volume Pump remain at the scene alongside a Command Support Unit.

"As the incident continues, arrangements have been put in place to maintain emergency response cover across Northern Ireland. The incident is expected to continue into this evening.

"We continue to ask the public to avoid the area and for local residents to remain in their homes."

The cause of the fire is now being dealt with as deliberate.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Detectives are appealing for information following a report of a fire at derelict premises on the Ballymena Road area of Ballymoney yesterday afternoon (Monday 22nd November).

"Shortly before 4:30pm, it was reported that a fire had started in an empty factory building in the area. Colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene and the fire is now under control. There were no reports of anyone inside the property during the incident.

"Enquiries are continuing but at this stage, the fire is being treated as deliberate.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the Ballymena Road area, and those living nearby are asked to keep their doors and windows closed.

"We would appeal to anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to contact detectives on 101, quoting reference number 1281 22/11/21.
