Ballymena United youngster Abi Sweetlove makes history at SuperCupNI

Ballymena United youth manager Chris Duff has predicted big things for history-maker Abi Sweetlove.

The talented teenager starred for the young Sky Blues as they kicked off their SuperCupNI campaign with an impressive 4-0 win over Larne yesterday.

Abi's appearance in the Minor section saw her become the first female footballer to ever play in a boys' team at the youth tournament.

"It is a brilliant achievement for Abi," said Ballymena youth manager Duff.

"She is absolutely outstanding. She didn't put a foot wrong today.

"Abi has been with myself since she was five years old, and she even stood out from the rest back then.

"She is a great talent and one to look out for in the future. She will definitely travel and play football across the water.

"Abi is so versatile. She started at centre half today but moved into left-back. She can play in midfield and also out wide.

"I don't think she lost the ball once today. She was probably our most consistent player.

"Abi came to the club's mini-soccer programme when she was five years old. From five, she stayed with me the whole way up, Under 8s, 9s, 10s and 13s.

"She also plays for ClubNI as well for the Under 15 girls. She captained ClubNI to their Foyle Cup win last year, she is absolutely fantastic."

It should come as no surprise to see Abi excel at football.

Her brother is Ben Wylie, the Celtic youth footballer who captained Co Antrim to the Junior title two years ago.

"Yes, Ben is Abi's brother so football definitely runs in the family," Duff added.

"She has the talent to follow in Ben's footsteps."
