Ballymena United snap up Bohemians defender Ciaran Kelly on loan for start of new season

Ballymena United made their third signing in four days this evening when they snapped up defender Ciaran Kelly on loan from Bohemians.

Kelly, 22, joins the Sky Blues on a short term deal, initially until January, after securing international clearance for the new season..

The 6’3” tall centre back previously played for Drogheda United and St Pat’s Athletic before joining Bohs ahead of the 2020 campaign in January.

United boss David Jeffrey said: “We were looking to strengthen our options at centre back and Ciaran comes highly recommended following his time in the League of Ireland.

“He is tall, commanding, he has a good left foot, he is pacy and will help us face the challenges of a new season. "

Jeffrey believes the loan move can be beneficial for both parties.

He said: “Ciaran and his dad came up on Monday, we showed him the facilities, talked though our ambitions and described how he could help us and we could help him.

“I’ve got to say thank you to (Bohemians manager) Keith Long who allowed him to come and join us and we look forward to working with Ciaran in the weeks ahead.”

Ballymena, who kick off the new season away to Coleraine on October 17, swapped striker Adam Lecky for Crusaders forward Paul McElroy earlier this evening.

They also sealed the surprise, high profile signing of twice-capped Northern Ireland striker Shay McCartan on Monday evening.

McCartan, 26, who left Bradford City in May, agreed a deal with the Sky Blues after returning to work in the family business in the summer.
