Ballymena GP services at medical centre to close

A medical centre which provides GP services for around 4,000 patients in Ballymena is set to close from the start of May.

The contractor for Kells and Connor Medical Practice said it would be resigning its contract from April 30.

No other contractor was identified for the practice which means it will effectively close its doors on May 1.

The Department said all alternatives to closing the practice were "fully exhausted".

It also said that the 4,000 patients registered with the medical centre would be reassigned to other GP services in the surrounding area.

A statement urged people not to try and switch practices to another in the area, as this would be an automatic process.

Letters are being issued to those affected and updates will be issued in the coming weeks.

"The Department acknowledges the ongoing and significant pressures on GP practices, stemming from the fact that demand for their services is outstripping current capacity to provide it," a department statement read.

Patients of the medical centre have been told they may continue to use it as normal up until April 30.
