Ballyhornan incident: Driver rescued after car leaves road and crashes onto beach on Christmas Day

A driver had to be rescued on Christmas Day after their car left the road and crashed onto the beach.

Emergency services were called after the vehicle left the road and ended up on its roof on the shoreline off Rocks Road in Ballyhornan, Co Down.

The incident happened at around 9.40pm on Saturday, December 25.

Police, fire service and the coastguard were called but the fire service were not needed at the scene on arrival.

In a statement on Facebook, Newcastle Coastguard said: "Newcastle Coastguard was tasked to Ballyhornan when reports of a vehicle leaving the coast road and unfortunately ending up on the shoreline. Thankfully the casualty was safely removed from the upturned vehicle. PSNI and NIFRS were also in attendance. Belfast CGOC coordinated the incident."

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "Police received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision on the Rocks Road, Ballyhoran, Downpatrick, at approximately 9.40pm last night, Saturday December 25th.

"There were no reports of any injuries."
