Ballygunner 1-24 De La Salle 1-15: Former Brighton star wins Waterford title for his club

Former Brighton and Ireland under-21 soccer star Dessie Hutchinson enjoyed a fairytale debut county final for Ballygunner as his 1-3 sealed a sixth Waterford title in a row for the club.

Playing alongside his brothers Wayne and JJ, Hutchinson took his tally to 3-17 from play for the Championship and wasted no time in asserting his authority yesterday at Walsh Park.

The 22-year-old scored a gaol in the fifth minute as Ballygunner threatened to run riot and moved into a nine point lead in the opening quarter, Pauric Mahony scoring five points in that time.

Eddie Meaney’s goal brought De La Salle back into it against the wind and the gap was down to a more manageable 1-11 to 1-6 by the interval.

De La Salle got to within two points with the wind at their backs in the second half but the holders responded with eight points in a row. Paddy Leavy, Barry O’Sullivan, Mahony (0-12), Peter Hogan, Hutchinson and Conor Power helped make it 33 matches unbeaten in the county.
