Ballycastle caravan park fire being treated as suspected arson, police say

The PSNI are appealing for information after a caravan park was the target of a "reckless" arson attack in Ballycastle, Co Antrim.

Police received a report of a caravan on fire on Clare Road just before 6.10 am this morning (April 17).

NIFRS and police attended the scene of the blaze at the Causeway Coast Holiday Park which saw one caravan be completely destroyed.

PSNI Inspector Mullan said: "While an investigation is underway to establish exactly what happened and the cause of the fire, at this time, we are treating this as suspected arson.

"This was a reckless act and it is fortunate the fire didn’t spread to other caravans and that no one was injured."

Local Sinn Féin councillor Cara McShane remarked that it appeared to be an "indiscriminative attack" and that the incidents of this morning could have easily been "a catastrophe".

She said: "This appears to be an indiscriminate attack on three caravans just inside the entrance of the Causeway Coast caravan park in Ballycastle.

"From my experience and talking to many people this morning, this definitely appears to have been an isolated incident. Thankfully nothing like this has ever happened in Ballycastle in the past but we know that easily this morning could have been a catastrophe.

"Only for it happening maybe at a time where people were starting to get up and move around, emergency services were on scene really quickly and we're so grateful particularly for the fire brigade who extinguished one of the caravans that had been set alight.

"Each caravan has a gas cylinder and that easily could have turned into a disaster today with neighbouring properties on the Clare Road but I've spoke to the site owner this morning, we know that the area is staffed and there's CCTV and an investigation is now underway.

"I would just appeal to anyone with information to bring that forward to the police. The Ballycastle community don't want this, we know that this area is a huge attraction for people to come and visit, particularly this year of staycations and after a year of lockdown we want people to come and visit Ballycastle and to feel safe wherever they stay."

The PSNI are looking to hear from anyone who was in the area at around 6am by contacting them on the non-emergency number 101.
