Ballyboden St Enda's player tests positive for Covid-19 but club hopeful to keep playing

Dublin and Leinster football champions Ballyboden St. Enda's have confirmed that an adult player has tested positive for Covid-19.

The south-Dublin club, however, have not halted activities as the player in question isolates and the HSE conduct contact tracing.

If the club was to shut down, it's likely to cause fixture chaos with both their senior hurling and football sides preparing for upcoming county quarter-finals.

The hurlers take on St. Vincent's in the Dublin SHC quarter-finals on Saturday evening, while their footballers are also likely to be action next week.

A club statement read: "Unfortunately, a Ballyboden St. Enda’s adult player has tested positive for Covid-19.

"The player himself is well, and he and his family are isolating in accordance with protocol.  The HSE has been notified and contact tracing is taking place.

"Unless individuals are specifically notified otherwise by the HSE, contact in the context of GAA activity is considered to be casual contact and all training and games may continue in line with Covid protection processes and policies."

The club has around 3,000 members and currently fields over 170 teams across hurling and football at all age groups.

It comes after a second Donegal GAA club this week has shut down due to a suspected case of Covid-19 among its members.

Naomh Muire GAA club in Mullaghderg have halted activities after the club confirmed that a suspected case of the deadly bug had been detected.

The club said: "C.L.G. Naomh Muire are suspending all club activities until further notice due to a suspected case of Covid19 within the club."

Donegal side Four Masters also temporarily shut down on Tuesday due to potential contacts with people who have shown symptoms of Covid-19.

Four Masters tweeted: "As a precautionary measure all activity within Four Masters GAA Club has been temporarily suspended from today until further notice.

"This is due to a potential contact with a person who has shown symptoms of  COVID-19."
