Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey: Florida roundup

Florida is holding elections, including for legislative offices, on Aug. 20, 2024. A number of candidates running in these elections completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.

Below is a selection of responses from the candidates who filled out the survey as of Aug. 22. To read each candidate’s full responses, click his or her name at the bottom of the article.

Nate Douglas (D) is running for Florida House of Representatives District 37, and the Democratic primary is on Aug. 20, 2024. Here’s how Douglas responded to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

“Local Economics … I will prioritize anti-trust legislation and promote economic fairness, empower workers, support small businesses, and create a more democratic economic system while effectively regulating corporate power, and ensuring healthy market competition.

Education … Quality education should be accessible for all students. …

Healthcare … I will fight to make our healthcare system sustainable and fight for the expansion of Medicaid because healthcare is a human right. …

Development … Increase funding for more transit such as bus-only lanes, light-rail, and aerial transit.”

Maura Cruz Lanz (R) is running for Florida House of Representatives District 64, and the Republican primary is on Aug. 20, 2024. Here’s how Cruz Lanz responded to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

“We must protect our children from woke ideology and the over sexualizing of our children in school in their curriculums. Protecting parental rights school choice. Also, trying to end the scourge of human trafficking and child sex trafficking in the state of Florida. Helping cut taxes and cost-of-living for the citizens of Florida cutting bureaucracy from our lives in many areas.”
