Ballot boxes being opened as Renfrewshire count begins at Braehead Arena

The ballot boxes have arrived and the counts have begun at Braehead Arena as Renfrewshire prepares to find out its new MSPs for the next parliamentary term.

Voters were filing into polling stations right up until 10pm on Thursday to cast their two votes in what is being billed as the most important election in the country's history.

People can expect to discover the results of the Paisley, and Renfrewshire North and West ballots by early this evening.

But Renfrewshire South and the West Scotland list result will not be revealed until tomorrow.

The SNP's George Adam will be hoping he can hold onto the Paisley seat for a third term in office, while his party colleague Natalie Don is the favourite to replace Derek Mackay in Renfrewshire North and West.

Meanwhile, nationalist Tom Arthur will be hoping he can secure another five years at Holyrood after becoming an MSP for the first time back in 2016.

But they will face competition from candidates from the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, and Greens as well as new parties Scotia Future and the Scottish Family Party, who will all be hoping they can muscle their way in.
