Ballon d’Or Feminin 2021 awarded to Barcelona star Alexia Putellas with Chelsea’s Sam Kerr third

Alexia Putellas won the 2021 Ballon d’Or Feminin award after a storming year with Barcelona.

The award for the best player in women’s football over the past year was handed out on Monday evening at a ceremony in Paris.

The 27-year-old, who holds the appearances record for Spain’s women’s team, led her club to a second-consecutive league title in 2021 and secured the Champion’s League title with a thumping 4-0 win over Chelsea in the final.

Representing the Blues in the award was Sam Kerr, who finished third behind Barcelona’s Jennifer Hermoso.

Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema finished fourth with Chelsea trio Pernille Harder (seventh), Jessie Fleming (ninth) and Fran Kirby (tenth) also nominated.

France Football, the magazine which presents the Ballon d’Or, added the Feminin award to the men’s trophy in 2018. Lyon’s Ada Hegerberg was the inaugural winner before United States star Megan Rapinoe claimed the 2019 honour.

Last year, the ceremony was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier in the proceedings, Pedri won the Kopa Trophy for best men’s young player and Robert Lewandowski was handed a new award, the Striker of the Year.
