Ballon d'Or 2021 odds and full list of nominees as Mohamed Salah gets nod

The 30-man shortlist is for the prestigious Ballon d'Or was announced on Friday after last year's award was cancelled due to the global pandemic.

It was the first time since its founding in 1956 that football's most coveted individual prize was not handed out.

A number of Liverpool stars missed out following the Reds' incredible title winning campaign in 2019/20.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was runner-up to winner Lionel Messi in 2019, while Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were also in the top five.

However, after a third-place Premier League finish and disappointing Champions League run last season, no Liverpool player is a favourite to win the award this year, that despite Salah's nomination and his excellent start to the 2021-22 season,

Here's who the bookmakers have as their favourites (via SkyBet).

Lionel Messi: 1/2

Despite not winning La Liga with Barcelona last season and only reaching the round of 16 in the Champions League, Lionel Messi is the favourite to win the award for a seventh time.

However, he was top scorer in La Liga with 30 goals and kept his side in a title race.

Robert Lewandowski: 5/1

It's no surprise that Europe's top goalscorer and Golden Shoe winner for 2020/21 is one of the favourites.

Robert Lewandowski scored 40 goals in all competitions last term as Bayern Munich reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League and won the Bundesliga last season.

Jorginho: 5/1

It's no surprise to see Chelsea stars among the favourites given their Champions League triumph this year.

Jorginho was a standout performer in a successful season that also saw them finish fourth in the league last term.

Kevin de Bruyne: 12/1

Manchester City cruised to the Premier League title after losing out to Liverpool the previous season. Kevin de Bruyne was once again phenomenal and was named the PFA Players' Player of the Year.

One of Chelsea's best players as they won the European Cup for second time in the club's history.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 16/1

A disappointing season for Juventus, but Cristiano Ronaldo finished as the top goalscorer in Serie A last season so it's no surprise he's back among the favourites.

Mohamed Salah: 33/1

Salah is seemingly breaking records every week and remains one of the Premier League's best players - but a difficult previous season for the Reds will likely hinder his chances of winning the award.
