Balloch tragedy as body of 12-year-old girl is recovered from River Leven

The search for a child missing in the water in Balloch ended in tragedy with police finding the 12-year-old girl's body.

Police Scotland were called to a report of a youngster in difficulty in the River Leven, near Balloch Bridge, at about 6.45pm last night (Sunday).

Helicopters were spotted above the town at the foot of Loch Lomond during the search operation.

Her body was recovered from the water around three hours later.

Relatives have been informed.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Around 6.45pm on Sunday, August 9, officers were called to a report of a young girl in difficulty in the River Leven, near Balloch Bridge.

"Emergency services attended and searches were carried out. Around 9.45pm, a 12-year-old girl was recovered from the water and pronounced dead at the scene.

"Her relatives have been informed.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident, but the death is not being treated as suspicious and a full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."
