Ballet Flats and Mary Janes Replace Heels at Celebrity Events

There's a long-running assumption in event dressing that flats are what you change into after the photographs. That's no longer the case. Ballet flats and Mary Janes are showing up as the intended footwear at premieres, daytime brand events and appearances that would once have been finished, almost automatically, with a pump.

Google's spring 2026 data puts searches for both "ballet flats" and "Mary Jane shoes" at five-year highs, with warm-weather variations climbing sharply — "jelly flats" alone rose 360% over a month. The interest isn't in one shoe; it's in the whole flat category.

The two styles do different jobs. A ballet flat is minimalist by definition — a low-cut vamp, no fastening, a shape that reads as almost nothing on the foot. It disappears, which is useful when the clothing is the point. A Mary Jane adds a strap across the instep, and that single line does a surprising amount of work: it interrupts the foot visually, holds the shoe on more securely, and introduces a hardware moment at the buckle. Double- and triple-strap versions push further toward something that reads as designed rather than default.

Finish is where a flat earns its place at an event. Square and pointed toes both look more deliberate than a round one. Mesh, satin and patent all catch light in ways plain leather doesn't. Metallic finishes, crystal detail, bows and contrast toe caps give a low shoe the visual weight it needs to hold up against a formal outfit — which is the actual problem a flat has to solve on a carpet.

Proportion matters more than usual, because a flat is only an event choice if it's visible. Exposed ankles and shorter hems keep it in frame. That's why the trend has landed hardest alongside mini dresses, capri pants, cropped trousers and calf-length romantic skirts — all lengths that stop above the shoe rather than pooling over it. Wide trousers work too, but only when hemmed short enough to show the vamp.

The pairing with capris is worth flagging, since both are having a moment simultaneously. Google also recorded all-time-high search interest in "cropped pants" and "ankle pants" this year, with capris the top trending spring pants search. Two trends that expose the same part of the leg tend to reinforce each other.

None of this represents a retreat from polish. A satin Mary Jane with a crystal buckle is not a less-considered shoe than a leather pump; it's a differently proportioned one. What changes is where the outfit's formality sits — in the fabric and detail of the shoe rather than in the height of the heel. Flats aren't removing polish from event dressing. They're relocating it.
