Ballarat primary school closes amid COVID-19 scare, students told to isolate

One of Ballarat's largest primary schools has been closed after a confirmed coronavirus case visited the site late last week.

The doors at Alfredton Primary School were shut on Monday, with the school undergoing necessary cleaning after the case attended the school on Thursday and Friday.

It is unknown whether the positive case is a student or an adult.

The ABC understands students and staff who attended the school on those days are considered close contacts and are required to test and isolate for 14 days.

In an earlier letter from principal Laurel Donaldson, families were told all students should isolate as a precaution.

"Our school will be closed on Monday for 24 hours as a precaution to undergo necessary cleaning and to identify students or staff who may have had close contact with the case," the letter read.

"If we inform you that your child has been identified as a primary close contact, please make sure that your child remains isolated until you are contacted by the Department of Health directly.

"If we do not contact you ... your child should return to school on Tuesday, October 12."

It is the second time the school has been closed due to coronavirus, having also shut down in August last year.

Only students in prep to grade two were at the school at the time due to the existing state government restrictions.

The school has yet to be registered as an official exposure site with the government.

According to its latest annual report, Alfredton Primary School has around 560 students and more than 40 staff.
