Ball is in Reshad Jones’ court as Dolphins open mandatory mini-camp

The Dolphins have had a full boat this spring — the team has had terrific attendance at their voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) to this point in the offseason. The lone absence? Veteran safety Reshad Jones. Jones has still been hard at work, he’s been sharing videos of himself working out away from the team and getting himself ready for the 2019 season.

But is that going to be with the Dolphins? Does he want it to be? These are questions that we still do not have the answers for. The Dolphins likely do — coach Brian Flores has stated at several points throughout the offseason that he was electing to keep his conversations with Reshad confidential. So if Reshad Jones doesn’t actually show up for a mandatory mini-camp today, the team isn’t likely to be surprised.

But boy, will it kick up a firestorm. The Miami Herald recently reported that the Dolphins would “prefer” to trade Jones — the latest public report that declares Miami’s intentions with the veteran safety. If Jones decides to sit out today and this week? The pressure on this situation gets turned up and the Dolphins’ leverage in any potential trade dealing can potentially be compromised.

But if Jones were to arrive at the facility and partake with a business as usual approach, they can put a lid on this bubbling pot of speculation — at least for now. Regardless of how this saga meets its resolution, the ball is now in Reshad Jones’ court. Does he want to put the heat on Miami? Or will he play nice — as Flores has thus far this offseason?

UPDATE: Brian Flores met with the South Florida media this morning ahead of mini-camp and has announced that Reshad Jones is in attendance and the team expects him to practice today.
