Ball boy who gave Miguel Almiron thumbs up after missed chance is thanked by the player in person

The ball boy who made thousands smile with his heartwarming applause and thumbs up for Miguel Almiron after a missed chance has now been thanked in person by the Paraguayan midfielder.

Lucas Rochford had "one of his best days ever" when he was invited to the Newcastle United training ground to meet the player he supported during the Magpies' clash with Wolves on Sunday.

The 10-year-old from South Shields received a signed shirt from Almiron and met manager Steve Bruce before watching the team train.

Academy player Lucas went viral when cameras captured him applauding a distraught Almiron and giving him a thumbs up when he missed a chance, around half an hour into the match.

The Westoe Crown Primary School pupil said: "When Almiron came through on goal and he had hit against the barrier, everyone was like 'oh man, why did you miss that?' so I was trying to cheer him up.

"I put my thumbs up to say he'd done a good job because he looked upset."

On his day at the training ground, Lucas said: "I've met the players, I've got a signed shirt and I got to see all round the training facilities, now I'm watching them train.

"It's been one of my best days ever, it's really good.

"I'm over the moon that I'm here."

Currently part of the Newcastle United Academy, season ticket holder Lucas is usually to be found sitting in the Leazes End with his dad for the match.

But on Sunday he made his debut pitch side appearance when he and three of his fellow Academy players were given the chance to be ball boys at the game which ended 1-1.

Proud dad Liam said: "I'm really proud of how he's handled the whole thing.

"He's had the most amazing morning up here.

"I can't thank the club enough for this - it's something that will live with him for the rest of his life, it's absolutely fantastic."

Almiron said: "I want to thank Lucas for the support he gave me in the Wolves game, but not only that game.

"Thanks to all the fans for the support they always give us in all of the games."
