Balcony engulfed in flames as fire breaks out at a flat in a Seven Sisters tower block in Rochdale

A balcony was engulfed in flames after a kitchen fire broke out inside a flat in one of the 'Seven Sisters' tower blocks in Rochdale .

Fire crews were called to the scene on College Bank Way at around 9pm on Sunday (November 3) after receiving reports of black smoke coming from a balcony of one of the flats.

The blaze started in the kitchen of a third-floor flat, the fire service have confirmed.

Six crews were sent to tackle the fire which has now been controlled.

No one was injured in the incident and the block was not evacuated.

Pictures from the scene show the balcony engulfed in flames and smoke coming from the blaze.

A spokesperson from the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called just before 9pm to College Bank Way in Rochdale to reports of a black smoke coming from a high rise building.

"The fire involved a kitchen in a third floor flat.

"Six breathing apparatus and two jets were used.

"Six crews attended and four crews remain at the scene damping down.

"There were no injuries and nobody had to be rescued.

"The building did not need to be evacuated."

This is the second time a fire has broken out in the last three months at the 'Seven Sisters' tower blocks in Rochdale.

A 57-year-old was rushed to hospital after a blaze broke out in a block in September.

He tragically died after suffering from smoke inhalation .

Six other residents also suffered from the effects of inhaling smoke, while five residents in total were rescued from the Mardyke block.
