Karelia House, near Kenmore Perthshire was broken into overnight on Tuesday, November 3. Sewing machines and digital equipment were taken (internet grab)

Karelia House, where craft courses and workshops are run using top-of-the-range computer integrated sewing machines, had a break-in to its warehouse and back office.

The cafe and needlework business owned and run by Shirley Shearer reported that two Brother sewing machines - retailing at over £600 each - were stolen as well as a laptop, a Nikon and a Panasonic digital camera.

A staff member noticed at 8.30am on November 4 that a CCTV camera had been tampered with and was pointing the wrong way.

The premises on a road between Aberfeldy and Kenmore did not open on Wednesday morning as the incident was assessed by police investigators. However it was taking customers again by lunchtime.

Karelia House released CCTV images of one of the two suspected intruders on social media in an effort to identify the criminals.

Heavy shutters on the shop and cafe part of the building prevented them getting in there.

It appears they struggled to gain entry through the large warehouse doors for as much as three hours, eventually succeeding.

A description of the man seen entering the warehouse and back office followed: “Unfortunately Karelia House has been broken into last night. We have CCTV footage [of one of the perpetrators].

"Distinct swagger, well built. Hoodie and what looks like baggy trousers.

“He knew where the CCTV cameras were, prized open warehouse door and raided the back office.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers received a report of a break-in at a premises off the B846 near Aberfeldy, which is believed to have happened in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, November 4, 2020). Enquiries are at an early stage.”

On the same night, November 3 into November 4, two workmen suffered the theft of a large number of tools from a site near Kenmore, a few miles from the sewing store.

Greg Wittmann took to social media to speak about the loss of cordless power tools belonging to himself and pal Brett Murray.

Greg listed several power saws, cordless drills, nail guns, grinders, chargers and batteries gone.

Police have yet to say if they believe there is any link between these crimes.
