Baker Mayfield’s sass has no bounds.
In his NFL debut during the 2018 season, and in the middle of mounting a comeback against the New York Jets, the quarterback heard trash talk from an opposing defensive lineman: “Hey, rookie we are coming after you.”
It’s a fairly banal threat. But Mayfield had a perfect response: “I don’t even know who you are, man.” The statement made an impression on the Browns offensive line, who heard the back-and-forth. They were impressed, and laughed all the way back to the sideline after the series had ended.
ESPN’s Dianna Russini relayed this story from Browns offensive line coach Bob Wylie during Browns training camp on Wednesday.
Of course, there’s a good chance Mayfield should have known the name of the player on the Jets’ defensive line — but let’s chalk that up to a rookie mistake.
That moment came during the Browns’ 21-17 win in Week 3, when they came back from a 14-0 deficit. Mayfield’s remark may have won over the offensive line, but the win, in which the quarterback was 17 of 23 for 201 yards, was a major milestone in winning over the Cleveland fanbase.
