Baker Mayfield reminds Julian Edelman of…himself as Kent State’s QB

It can be difficult to peg down a comparison for Baker Mayfield as a quarterback. The Browns QB has his own style and talents that don’t easily fit in a convenient box. Yet one NFL standout wide receiver sees…himself?

That would be Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman of the New England Patriots, and the context in which Edelman made the comparison is not nearly as wacky as it sounds at first.

Edelman played quarterback at Kent State and was known for his gritty derring-do, willingness to take chances and in-your-face leadership style and swagger. Now that sounds like Mayfield, and that’s the comparison Edelman was making.

“By no means do I think I’m even closely as talented or as good as him, but I love Baker,’’ Edelman told Bleacher Report in an “Ask Me Anything’’ when asked which NFL QB reminds him most of his own days playing the position. “Competitor, feisty. I couldn’t throw it like him. I used to run it better. I like him. He’s not afraid to get up in your grill.’’

Here’s hoping the unconventional comparison continues with some championships!
