Baker Mayfield is worth 4 extra points for the Browns in gambling odds

Sometimes it’s fascinating to see behind the curtain of how the professional bookmakers arrive at their published odds. We got a glimpse of how much they value each NFL starting quarterback thanks to BetOnline and an informative post on Twitter.

The online sportsbook revealed how much value they give to each starter by showing how much impact there would be on the weekly line if that QB was not playing. In Baker Mayfield’s case, BetOnline determines that the Browns are four points more valuable with No. 6 under center than backup Drew Stanton (or Garrett Gilbert).

That’s one of the bigger starting values in the league. Only 11 teams have a greater dropoff from starter to backup, led by Aaron Rodgers at 7.5 points.

Remember, it’s not just the starter that factors in here. The fact Stanton is regarded (right or wrong) as one of the league’s better backups helps keep the margin lower than, say, the fall from Deshaun Watson to Joe Webb in Houston or Matt Ryan to what’s let of Matt Schaub in Atlanta.
