Baker Mayfield: Hip injury ‘kind of tender’ but not an excuse

Baker Mayfield departed the Cleveland Browns’ 32-28 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the third quarter with a hip injury. Mayfield briefly went to the locker room for an evaluation after landing hard on his left hip following a run for a first down.

Backup Garrett Gilbert warmed up and got his helmet on, but Mayfield was cleared by the medical staff and did not miss a play. The second-year QB talked about the injury in his postgame press conference.

“Kind of tender right now, but we will see,’’ said Mayfield. He figures to get extra attention and treatment during the bye week.

Mayfield refused to use the wound as a reason for his poor performance.

“A little bit, but that’s not an excuse,’’ he said when asked if the hip impacted his play. “It hurts, but it’s a physical game of football.”

The Browns players do not return to practice until a week from Wednesday thanks to the upcoming bye week.
