Baker Mayfield has a history of awkward and snubbed handshakes

It was another awful game in a rough 2019 season for Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, which also included San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa responding to Mayfield’s flag plant from his days in Oklahoma.

But there was something else that happened before kickoff involving Mayfield. San Francisco cornerback Richard Sherman told NFL.com that the QB didn’t shake Sherman’s hand before the coin toss.

“That’s some college (expletive),” Sherman told Michael Silver. “It’s ridiculous. We’re all trying to get psyched up, but shaking hands with your opponent — that’s NFL etiquette. And when you pull bush league stuff, that’s disrespectful to the game. And believe me, that’s gonna get us fired up.”

UPDATE: Here’s video from pre-game. Was there a snub here? It’s hard to tell.

This is hardly the first time there’s been a Mayfield controversy with shaking hands.

Last season, critics including ESPN’s Damien Woody called him out for giving former Browns coach Hue Jackson a cold handshake after Cleveland beat the Cincinnati Bengals:

The funny thing about all this is Mayfield was on the end of a snubbed handshake in 2017 while with Oklahoma. Kansas players refused to shake the QB’s hand before their game:

Maybe Mayfield took a page out of the Jayhawk handbook for this one.
