Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield knows his top two receivers are rehabbing from offseason surgeries, but oozed optimism over what Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry will accomplish in 2020.
"They're ready to take over and it's their time now," Mayfield said during a Wednesday Zoom call with local media. "They know that, they know we only have so many more opportunities together. So they're going to do everything for each other.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the productivity they have."
Beckham had a core muscle injury repaired on Jan. 21, while Landry underwent hip surgery on Feb. 4.
"Those guys are working extremely hard ... they look really good. They say they feel really good and it appears that way," Mayfield said of what he's seen through social media and YouTube.
Landry caught 83 passes for 1,174 yards and six touchdowns in 2019, while Beckham totaled 74 receptions for 1,035 yards and four scores after being traded by the New York Giants.
"Them being a little bit banged up _ well, not a little bit, they had to have surgery _ it definitely hindered them physically," Mayfield said. "But the mental part of it ... I think affected it more. Because if you don't feel like you're able to play at a certain level, that's really frustrating, if you're not able to physically do the things you're normally capable of doing. So for them I feel that frustration."
Mayfield knows Beckham and Landry may be limited when training camp begins, the date not set because of the coronavirus pandemic. But Mayfield said he's sat in on some Zoom meetings led by receivers coach Chad O'Shea and believes that will "create a great foundation" of him being on the same page scheme-wise with Beckham and Landry.
