Baker Mayfield had an impressive game as a passer in Sunday’s 27-25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mayfield completed 19 of his 29 pass attempts for 258 yards. He threw no interceptions and tossed two touchdowns.
For as good as it was, it should have been better. And Mayfield knows it.
Mayfield badly missed a wide-open Rashard Higgins in the end zone, a throw that made the rounds of the national media as an example of why Mayfield still isn’t good enough.
Those critiques are right. Just ask Mayfield himself. He talked about it in his press conference.
“I went on the Higgy (WR Rashard Higgins) one from high to low instead of high to low. I should be putting that ball on Higgins early instead of going from (TE) Harrison (Bryant) to him. Just late in the progression. I just need to put it on him earlier,” Mayfield explained.
He also brought up another seemingly simple throw he missed, this one to Jarvis Landry on a rollout. Landry had a great game but it would have been even more prolific with a good throw from Mayfield. The young QB also addressed that miss,
“The one to the left, the rollout there to Jarvis, just get it down. Plain and simple. I have made that throw 1,000 times. There are a lot of throws today that I make consistently so it is about making them. We found a way to win and that is the most important thing, but I am always going to be critical of myself.”
