Baker Mayfield: Browns have too many guys ‘not focused on doing their job’

Baker Mayfield is looked upon as the leader of the Cleveland Browns. It’s a responsibility the second-year quarterback takes pride in and takes seriously. Part of being the leader means facing the media after a tough loss. A dapper but dour Mayfield fielded questions from reporters after the Browns’ 27-13 loss to the New England Patriots.

Mayfield took responsibility for the alarmingly poor lack of discipline and execution on the offense from early in the game.

“Not disciplined. Guys not focused on doing their job. It starts first and foremost with me. To be a leader every single down. I’ve (got to) get our guys lined up, make sure we’re set, we’re paying attention.”

He showed some empathy towards RB Nick Chubb, who fumbled on consecutive snaps in the first quarter,

“This isn’t Nick Chubb’s fault whatsoever. He’s definitely going to be hard on himself. He knows what he has to do,” Mayfield said before acknowledging the entire team’s poor execution. “But there’s so many other things that, if we do it the right way we’re still in that game.”

He continued with a familiar refrain from the 2-5 start,

“We’ve pointed out the problem,” he said. “Now it’s about executing on Sundays.”

Mayfield knows he will be judged in part on how well the team rallies when they get back on the field next Sunday in Denver.
