Great British Bake Off viewers said they were "gutted" to see Tom make an early exit from the show - with many insisting the judges picked the wrong baker to go home.
It was a shaky start for several of the contestants, with cracked mini rolls, one producing cake described as 'a real mess' and another's creation collapsing when Paul cut into it.
But it was Tom from Kent who became the first to leave the tent, despite his signature swiss rolls being described as “not at all bad” by Prue.
He also came fifth out of the 12 in the technical challenge with his well-baked malt loaf.
Some viewers felt Amanda, who saw her "surf explosion" cake collapse after Paul cut it - should have been the first one sent home.
Pickle said on Twitter: "I think Tom was robbed. What a dude."
TheTinyTomboy said: "Tom going over Amanda? How? Amanda just barely scraped the surface of the Showstopper brief and failed miserably on the first two."
CheekySausage wrote: "Please don't ever kick out Jürgen!!! He's the very sweetest. Tom's elimination is a thing that shouldn't have happened. From where I'm sitting, Amanda was worse all round but who am I to judge when I'm not there to taste?"
Binty said: "My husband is incensed! He’s just walked out in a (fake) strop! TBF I’m with him though because Tom shouldn’t have gone when that other guys cake was basically mush."
And Grainne said: "Tom didn't deserve to go out first. So gutted for him."
