Bake Off sends second contestant home as youngest baker gets the boot

The Great British Bake Off returned to TV screens on Tuesday night for its second week and another contestant has left the competition.

Maisam, the series youngest baker at just 18, was the second of the batch to be given the boot as a fresh group of amateur bakers were put to the test in biscuit week.

The student and sales assistant from Greater Manchester failed to wow the judges with her biscuit mask in the showstopper challenge as Prue Leith called her creation "simple but effective" and Paul told her the piece's "colours [were] fantastic.

But Maisam, who is originally from Libya, didn't match the creations of her fellow bakers who presented elaborate designs which were packed with flavour.

Maisam was this year's youngest contestant (Channel 4)

Maisam has lived in the UK since she was nine and speaks five languages (English, Arabic, Amazigh, Spanish and Turkish). Ahead of the show, she said she aims to make that seven by the time she turns 20.

The teenager said she was very "proud" of herself as she exited the show, with her fellow bakers and judges astounded by her talent at her young age.

This week’s theme saw bakers produce and illusion macaron in the signature challenge. They were judged on how well baked they were as well as the similarity in appearance and size of each mini cake.

The second technical of series saw the 13 bakers given ingredients for garibaldi biscuits along with a vague method hidden under a piece of gingham.

They were left to work out the rest of the recipe for “a fruity favourite”. And for the showstopper, bakers were tasked with making a 3D mask made entirely from biscuits.

Crucially, the masks had to stand up.

The Star Baker crown went to architectural assistant Maxy this week, who stunned the judges with her creation.

Prue called the 29-year-old's lemon, lime and coconut sugar biscuits and Florentines a "burst of happiness", while Paul Hollywood praised her "fantastic design, great flavours and well thought through" mask.

After beating her fellow baking enthusiasts to the top spot, mum-of-two Maxy said: "I can't believe I got Star Baker, I didn't think I'd even get onto the show!"

Her talent is unsurprising as Swedish-born Maxy studied fine art and went on to achieve a Masters degree in Architecture, pausing her final qualifications to raise her two daughters, Tyra and Talia.

Former charity director Will was the first baker to be sent home last week after he “overbaked” his showstopper in cake week.

Will, 45, from London, became the first to leave the series after failing to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith with his ginger and caramel square signature and his final bake which recreated his former north London flat.
