Bake Off's 'Terminator' handed competition boost with first ever German week

Affable Great British Bake Off contestant Jürgen will soon have an even bigger advantage over his rivals - after show bosses introduced the first ever German week.

The keen trombonist has already been named Star Baker twice, with bookies installing him as the 7/2 firm favourite to win this year's series.

Now Paul Hollywood has revealed that the pre-recorded theme was a big success, along with a “free from” week, in which the bakers had to try gluten and dairy-free baking.

“We did a German week which is the other unusual one,” he explained. “And that was actually very good. Very good. They were classic bakes and it was fascinating.”

The recipes included a German yeasted cake, and fellow judge Prue Leith agreed it had been “very interesting”.

IT professional Jürgen, originally from the Black Forest in southwest Germany, is steaming ahead in the competition thanks to his calm attitude, great flavours and excellent engineering skills.

The baker, who lives with his wife, son and pet rabbit in Brighton, is so good that Italian baker Guiseppe has nicknamed him The Baking Terminator while Paul called him “the flavour king”.

In the show's six challenges so far, he hasn't put a foot wrong, with his gravity-defying Bedtime Reading showstopper a huge hit with the judges and this week's structurally-sound gingerbread windmill another triumph.

He also impressed with his Black Forest mini-rolls, perfect jammy dodgers and chai-flavoured brandy snaps.

Jürgen, 56, proved an instant smash with fans, who were delighted when the Bake Off Twitter posted a picture of him as a young man. “He's a model and he's looking good,” one fan quipped.

Viewers fell in love with him after he won Star Baker for the first time and declared: “I am a very happy Jürgen indeed.”

He then phoned his family to tell them the happy news – and no one answered.
