Bake Off's Prue Leith had to develop 'thick skin' to deal with internet trolls

Great British Bake Off star Prue Leith has told how she has had to develop a “thick skin” because of web trolls – not least when she accidentally tweeted the show’s winner.

The star, 80, was mortified in 2017 when hours before the final was aired she revealed that Sophie Faldo had won.

She said: “I did not realise how much of a national treasure it was until I inadvertently tweeted the winner on my first year which was absolutely terrible.

“I had thousands of people saying ‘you have ruined my life. I feel suicidal.’”

She said there was “some justification with them being upset as it really mattered to them” but said she there were a lot of other anonymous tweeters out there who attack for no reason.

“Of course you want to react and come back and say this is not true but you cannot go back as every single tweet you put in fuels more people to go back in and crucify you,” she said.

“You have to develop a very thick skin.”

Prue who mistimed her tweet as she was trekking in Bhutan, south-east Asia, on the day the final aired issued a grovelling apology to Bake Off fans.

She said: “I am in a different time zone and mortified by my error.”
