Bake Off's Noel Fielding told to leave by Matt Lucas after 'excruciating' moment

The Great British Bake Off tent fell silent during the final with Matt Lucas telling his co-host Noel Fielding to leave.

The Channel 4 show had reached its grand finale but Noel found that one of his jokes fell into a chasm with the bakers and judges looking away awkwardly as the 'tumbleweed' moment blew through the tent.

Matt suggested that Noel took time out after his disastrous attempt to make everyone laugh ahead of the signature bake challenge.

Little Britain star Matt, 46, said to the bakers: "You made it you’re in the final and it’s your last ever Signature challenge.

“The judges would like you to bake eight beautiful decorated custard slices.”

Matt then asked: “Noel, are you a fan of custard?”

The 47-year-old Mighty Boosh star replied: “I love custard. I was very upset when I heard general custard had died at the battle of little creme horn."

The quip was greeted with silence as no-one could muster a titter at Noel's joke.

Matt stepped in and told his co-host: "I think you should just leave."

Shoulders hunched, Noel trudged off as Matt continued: "You have two and a half hours. On your mark, get set…”

“Bake,” Noel shouted off-screen as the hilarious segment came to an end.

It seemed that Laura's signature bake fell as flat as Noel's joke as she had a major issue when her custard didn't set and it all fell apart as soon as she tried to get it out of the tray.

She has had a difficult time over the series and this disaster was dealt with by having a good cry in the fridge.

Laura was comforted by Noel, who urged her not to give up on the final. He told her: "You know Björn Borg the tennis player?

“The reason he was such a good champion is that he could forget anything, so the next point was all he would think about.”

Laura came out fighting but struggled with the Technical, a Walnut Whirl, and her dream of being crowned the Bake Off champion lay in tatters.
