Bake Off's most controversial axing ever as baker stays despite forgetting eggs

The first departure from The Great British Bake Off 2019 has caused a lot of controversy.

Top Knot enthusiast Dan Chambers was the unlucky first casualty of the new series after failing to impress during cake week.

The 32-year-old support worker, from Rotherham, went crashing out after producing a raw fruit cake in the signature bake challenge, but seemed to have turned it around by the Showstopper.

Furious Bake Off viewers turned on judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith for making the 'wrong' decision.

They insisted that Jamie Finn should have been given the chop instead after forgetting his eggs in one baking challenge and coming last in the technical challenge.

Taking to Twitter to voice their fury, one angry viewer said: "Well that was outrageous - Jamie is a lovely guy but even forgets to put eggs in cake mix!!"

"ABSOLUTE BULLS***. Jamie was like a fresher trying to make a pot noodle and still ballsing it up," added another.

A third said: "Um I already love Jamie, and I love he’s still here, but strongly disagree with that judgement

"Wasn't expecting Dan! How the hell did Jamie make it through????," added a fourth.

The 20-year-old Sports Science student and part-time waiter, from Surrey, seemed convinced he was going home after a host of mix ups in the tent.

After forgetting a vital ingredient for his dog-themed bake, Jamie shouted: "Oh my goodness. I’ve forgotten the eggs. I’ll have to start again. No wonder it’s like mixing concrete."

He started again but struggled once more - with Paul confessing his bake was "rubbery" after sampling a piece.

Convinced he was a goner, Jamie said: "Wow. I really messed up. You don’t really know until you’re under pressure what it’s going to be like. I’m just prepared for the worst. If it happens, it happens.

Jamie, who was a hit with viewers despite his bad bakes, was stunned by the result and promised to come back and convince people he "could bake".

But viewers pointed out that Dan's treasure island cake had got rave review from the judges, despite the lack of passion fruit curd.

Prue claimed the waterfall was "very beautifully done", while Paul confessed it was "clever".

Speaking about his exit, Dan said: "Well, it wasn’t a piece of cake at all! I love fruit cake and it hasn’t put me off making one, but next time I won’t make it in three hours.

"I had a bad week, but I will definitely take away the friendships. I am not going to miss the baking under pressure – I’m just going to miss everyone in that tent.

"It’s the nature of the show when something goes wrong on that particular week, you’ve had it, and I understand how the show works and I felt it was the right decision that I should go."

*The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays on Channel 4 at 9pm
