Great British Bake Off host Matt Lucas says the final was so emotional it floored him.
The nail-biting show, in which Laura Adlington, Dave Friday and Peter Sawkins battle it out to win the series, was recorded in the summer and will air on Tuesday.
Comic Matt, who is finishing his first series co-hosting the Channel 4 show with Noel Fielding, said the tension was too much for him.
He said: “I had to go to my hotel room and sit there alone for two hours, because I was quite overcome with emotion. I was really, really happy for the person that won. But I was also sad because there can only be one winner.”
Judge Paul Hollywood said it was harder than ever to choose between contestants this year.
He said: “The standard’s been exceptional. Who was going home came down to the finest lines some weeks, ridiculously so. That’s rare. And they all did really well in the final.
“Everything fell into place. It was amazing.”
Since replacing Sandi Toksvig on the show, Matt has taken to telling off Paul and fellow judge Prue Leith.
He said: “I probably became a pain in the neck. We’d go for dinner and I’d be analysing everyone’s bakes. I’d be giving Paul and Prue hell sometimes, because I disagreed with their decisions.”
