Bake Off's Laura reduced to tears after Paul Hollywood unveils 'confusing' instructions

The Great British Bake Off's Laura Adlington breaks down in tears during the semi-final – as she struggles to understand the incredibly complicated instructions for Paul Hollywood's technical challenge.

The four remaining contestants are asked to bake a Danish cornucopia, also known as a Horn of Plenty, as part of patisserie week.

But Laura sighs: “Never heard of it. Never eaten it. Never seen it. It's going to be fun isn't it?"

And weeping at the pages of instructions, she adds: “This is like literally my worst nightmare. I don't have a logical brain. I can't do this.”

Seeing her crying, presenter Matt Lucas says: “Stressful isn't it?”

When she admits she fears not having anything to present at the end of the round, he tells her: “But you are going to present something, aren't you?

"There is something in you that will get you to the next step. Because if there wasn't, you wouldn't be here. You're going to smash it.”

Laura, 31, responds well to the comic's pep talk. “Bless you, you're the best,” she tells him.

“If I achieve this I'm going to have the biggest glass of gin. And sambucca chasers.”

Speaking after filming ended the digital manager, from Kent, told how being on the programme has helped her to conquer low self-esteem.

Laura explained: “When I was growing up, I never saw anyone like me in magazines or on the TV.

"I’ve struggled with low self-esteem and anxiety for most of my life, although I wasn’t officially diagnosed until I was 24."

She added: "But baking brings me so much joy. Before going on Bake Off, I was terrified of being trolled because of my weight, but the vast majority of comments have been positive and the support I’ve had has been overwhelming.”

She added to Radio Times: “It’s definitely made me more confident in my own skin and realise there are good people in the world. I think that’s the best thing about Bake Off. It’s not about looks.

"It’s just a kind, wholesome show about a bunch of normal people who like to bake.”

In tonight's Channel 4 show, viewers will discover which of the remaining bakers - Laura, accountant Hermine, security guard and new dad Dave Friday and the youngest contestant, student Peter Sawkins - make it through to the final.

Laura, married to police community support officer Matt, admits: “It would be a bit of a kicker to go out the week before the final.”
