Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood accused of sabotage after cake disaster

Paul Hollywood was accused of 'sabotage' by Great British Bake Off host Noel Fielding after disaster struck for one contestant as the new series kicked off on Tuesday night.

This year's Bake Off line-up was only officially revealed last week but, just seven days later, it was time for millions of viewers to get their first look at this year's bakers.

The first episode of Bake Off 2021 got off to a hilarious and unexpected start as judge Paul led Noel, his co-host Matt Lucas and fellow judge Pru Leith, in a re-working of Billy Ray Cyrus' Achy Breaky Hear t, complete with the obligatory mullets and stonewashed denim.

After that musical opening, this year's contestants had to tackle three very different challenges; kicking off with a mini roll inspired bake and ending with a tricky 'gravity defying' illusion cake.

The 'defying gravity' element to the final round proved difficult for a number of bakers, including police officer Amanda.

And, after Paul had cut into it, she saw hers topple over, with bits of it left dangling over the kitchen bench.

As presenter Matt put his hand to his mouth in shock, Amanda apologised and Noel remarked: "Paul slowly sabotaged that."

While not taking the same view as Noel, GBBO viewers are concerned about how heavy handed Paul is when cutting cake.

After Amanda's disaster, on tweeted: "God, Paul Hollywood is brutal when he cuts into cakes."

In agreement, another wrote: "the way paul hollywood takes chunks out of cakes puts me on edge," and a third reacted: "It disconcerts me the way Paul Hollywood manhandles cake"

Despite her cake falling over, Amanda avoided elimination, with Kent software developer Tom the first baker to get their marching orders from the tent this year.
