Bake Off 'free from' theme sparks anger from fans after Freya's heart-breaking exit

Great British Bake Off fans have hit at show bosses over the theme for next week, upset at the fact that it would have been ideal for the show's first ever vegan baker Freya Cox.

The 19-year-old made waves before the new series had even started, due to her vegan approach to baking, with judge Pru Leith saying: "It's very interesting. I'm actually rather in favour of some...I mean, I think that's some revolting vegan commercial products out there, but vegan baking, if it's done right and the ingredients are good is absolutely delicious."

Freya was ecstatic and landing a place on the Bake Off line-up and quickly became a firm favourite with viewers before she was given by the boot in week 5, German Week, after her Upside-Down Yeast-Leavened Cake was underbaked.

The latest episode of Bake Off aired on Channel 4 on Tuesday night and, while some fans were gutted to see George Aristidou chosen to leave by the judges, the reveal that next week's theme would be 'Free from' left plenty of others livid on Freya's behalf that she didn't last long enough to do a week that would have suited her down to the ground.

Sharing a GIF of presenter Matt Lucas with his head in his hands, one tweeted: "OOOOOO NOT BAKE OFF DOING A FREE FROM WEEK AFTER FREYA HAS ALREADY LEFT that's heartbreaking, she would have SMASHED it"

Equally annoyed, another posted: "Oh, and Freya didn't make it there. Sad," and a third: "Still doesn’t seem right that Freya has left Bake Off.

Away from Channel 4, a former Bake Off winner is great guns on Strictly Come Dancing, with one of the show's first winners, John Whaite, consistently near the top of the leaderboard with pro partner Johannes Radebe.
