Bake Off fans stunned by Paul Hollywood's 'brutal' final comment to tearful Steph

Bake Off fans were left stunned tonight as Paul Hollywood made one final brutal comment to a very tearful Steph Blackwell.

Steph was devastated this evening as a number of things went very wrong during the final, from her flop of a souffle to her disastrous showstopper.

Bookies' favourite Steph, a shop assistant who'd won Star Baker four times, was up against David Atherton and Alice Fevronia in a bid to win the trophy.

However Steph was left in tears after mucking up her illusion picnic basket using only cake, sweet bread and biscuits.

After walking back to her bench, Paul went over to hug her and said: "Never mind Steph."

And fans were left wincing over his comment.

One tweeted: "'Never mind Steph" is the most brutally upsetting thing any human could have possibly said in that moment #gbbo #GBBOFinal."

Another commented: "#GBBOFinal She knows, Pru knows, Paul knows. Steph's f***ed it #GBBO."

A third remarked: "Paul literally went innnnn on Steph! So nasty. No need. #GBBO #GBBOFinal."

But another commented: "Paul comforting Steph is one of the sweetest things. I feel for her so much #gbbo #GBBOFinal."

Tonight, self-confessed “underdog” David won Bake Off – despite not being named as Star Baker once during the series.

After lifting the trophy, David admitted it was a huge shock. “Honestly it was never in my mind that I thought I could win this.

“It feels so good! It’s been weeks and weeks of intensity and fatigue and then to finish it with this - I saved the best til last, and it’s the best feeling in the world. Week on week other people were stronger, I was always the underdog and yet I just managed to get through.

“All of it is a bit surreal, and I am still trying to process it, but the whole Bake Off journey is non-stop and part of it is just having the stamina.”
