Bake Off fans slam 'unfair' ice cream cake task on hottest day of the year

Great British Bake Off viewers were not impressed with the latest technical challenge on the Channel 4 show.

While some viewers saw the entertaining side, others believed the latest challenge was "unfair".

The bakers were tasked with creating an ice cream cake of their choosing, but it didn't go to plan for many in the tent.

That's because the challenge happened to fall on the hottest day of the year in the UK, over the summer.

The UK saw temperatures well into the 30s earlier this year, with many embracing the heatwave amid the coronavirus pandemic.

At the time, the bakers who had formed a bubble to film the show had already began their baking journeys.

They were up to the latest set of challenges for what would be 80s week, tasked with making quiches and other treats.

But the final challenge was making an ice cream cake from scratch, with a design and flavour of their choosing.

Unfortunately, things went wrong for some bakers very quickly as the ice cream didn't set - and when it came out of the freezer, it immediately began to melt.

Some did better than others, with it evident the bakers were finding the whole thing stressful - and they weren't alone.

Viewers watching at home found themselves feeling "anxious" over the scenes, as the bakers rushed around in the heat, trying to keep themselves and their bakes cool.

Some contestants were left upset as they watched their cold treats melt before they'd even finished.

Watching at home, fans slammed the decision to give contestants that particular challenge on what was the hottest day of the year at that point.

While judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith revealed they couldn't have known the weather for that day of filming, many viewers believed it was "unfair" to let it go ahead knowing it would end pretty badly for some.

One viewer tweeted: "Pretty sure the UK is rivalling the US on collective stress levels right now thanks to this ice cream fiasco."

Another wrote: "Not being funny, but maybe don't make an ice cream task on the hottest day of the year in a tent with no air-con. Hardly a test of their skills."

A third agreed: "Asking them to make an ice cream cake on the hottest day of the year is so unfair!!"

Meanwhile, a fourth agreed: "Unfair to make them work with ice cream in that heat."

A fifth added: "This episode is giving me anxiety!"

Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
