Bake Off fans slam Prue Leith over 'harmful' comments

Fans of The Great British Bake Off have slammed Prue Leith for using the term 'worth every calorie.'

After the latest episode of the long-running Channel Four show, viewers flocked to Twitter to criticise judge Prue’s use of the sentiment.

They fumed that that language linking 'food and guilt' could be 'harmful' and 'dangerous' to people with eating disorders.

And fans pointed out that the focus of a baking contest should be on the taste and looks of the cakes rather than the calorie content.

"Ugggh Prue mentioned calories," said one viewer with a rolling eyes gif.

"PLEASE could someone tell Prue that ‘worth every calorie’ is a harmful sentiment that she should really not be making into a catchphrase?" asked another.

"It's such a simple thing but language that links food and guilt is so dangerous for ED sufferers or vulnerable people! Children who watch the show will find it so easy to make associations between food and being deserving of it," another wrote.

Another asked: "Can Prue stop talking about calories and how fatty everything is? I just wanna enjoy a pack of bourbons while I watch people bake I don't need this guilt Prue."

A fifth fumed: "Wish Prue would stop commenting on calories and 'fattening'. IT'S CAKE."

And another asked: "Why does Prue Leith on #GBBO have to keep going on about the calories in the bakes and how fattening they are? If she's worried about that sort of thing, she probably shouldn't be judging a baking contest."

Another pointed out: "Twice Prue mentioned calories last night, it’s not a diet show let us just enjoy this wholesome show without diet culture creeping in please."

And another pleaded: "Great British Bake Off, I think, has been so successful for so long because of its warmth, humour and pure love of baking.

"It’s the antidote to diet shows. But every time calories or fat are mentioned, it loses a bit of that loveliness. Make it stop."

While another Bake Off viewer observed: "Prue on BritishBakeOff AGAIN saying 'worth every calorie'…

"Please this isn’t needed. It’s not funny, it’s rooted in diet culture and it’s everything that is wrong with our modern food, weight obsessed, body image culture."

And another joked: "If Prue is worried about her calorie intake I would like to offer my services as cake eater in her place."

The Manchester Evening News has contacted Channel Four and representatives for Prue for comment.
