Bake Off 2021: Matt Lucas says new contestants are 'brilliant' as team go into bubble

Matt Lucas has given the first update for The Great British Bake Off 2021.

The comedian, who hosts the show alongside Noel Fielding, said he'd already seen some videos of this year's contestants and confirmed the team were "going into a bubble" ahead of filming starting soon.

Speaking on ITV's Lorraine, Matt teased the new "brilliant" bakers and said extra measures were being put in place so viewers could enjoy the cake tasting and handshakes they've come to know and love.

When asked when filming would begin, Matt said: "We're starting very soon. And, like last year, we're going into a bubble – we're all self-isolating and getting tested and then we're going into Covid-free bubble, so we can all taste each other's bakes and there can be handshakes and all sorts."

Matt also teased the new contestants and talked about working with co-host Noel.

He said: "So I've seen the video clips of all the new bakers and there's some brilliant ones in there."

Adding: "I just have fun and I love working with Noel. He's so funny."

Fans of The Great British Bake Off will be delighted to hear the news after finishing the recent celebrity version of the show for Stand Up To Cancer.

Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall, Star Wars actor Daisy Ridley, Atonement star James McAvoy and Double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes all took part in the series. You can read more here.

In 2020 Bake Off still went ahead in the midst of the pandemic with strict safety measures in place. Exceptional circumstances saw the team go into a bubble for seven weeks and it looks like this year's show will follow the same protocol.

2020 also saw the youngest ever contestant win the show. Peter Sawkins, 20, battled it out against Laura Adlington and Dave Friday during the finale but was later crowned winner.

Lorraine continues weekdays at 6am on ITV.
