Bainfield student flats: Napier scrambles to contain cluster as more students told to self isolate

Students at Edinburgh Napier University have been told to self-isolate for two weeks after a breakout cluster of the virus at one of the accommodation buildings.

Earlier this month it was confirmed that an outbreak had been reported at the Bainfield accommodation in Fountainbridge after first year students moved into the complex.

Since then, the affected individuals have been contacted and are now self-isolating, with those who develop symptoms asked to book a test immediately.

However, now all students at the university have been told to self-isolate if they attended any party or social gathering in the building, Edinburgh Live can report.

In public health advice issued today (Monday), students were told to stay at home or remain in their accommodation if they attended a gathering on the 12/13th September, when the outbreak is believed to have occurred.

On Monday, a total of 30 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Lothians, with a total 255 confirmed throughout Scotland.

As the daily figures continue to rise, the First Minister has stated that "doing nothing is not an option", and confirmed that an announcement will be made with further restrictions in the coming days.

Edinburgh Live contacted Napier University and NHS Lothian for comment.
