Bailiffs storm into disabled man's bedroom - only to discover they had raided the wrong house

Bailiffs forced their way into a Clifton resident's home to repossess his belongings - only to discover they got the wrong house.

Stephen Silverstone, 47, of Southchurch Court, was naked in bed when he claimed a man cowered over him at around 9.30am on Wednesday, October 2.

Petrified Mr Silverstone, who suffers with chronic back pain, thought he was being burgled and has been left traumatised by the ordeal.

The Clifton resident said he has rented his one bedroom flat from Nottingham City Homes for three years and the rent has always been paid on time.

Mr Silverstone, who is recovering from the flu, said it's lucky he was in at the time otherwise he may have returned later to find all of his things gone.

Speaking about the dramatic incident, he told Nottinghamshire Live: "I heard drilling. It must have been loud because I am deaf in one ear. It startled me.

"I have the flu and do not wear anything to sleep. I sat up and then a guy came into my bedroom and looked at me. I said 'what are you doing?'

"He looked at me very rudely, showed no ID, and he goes 'repossession.'

"There was no knock at the door. They have just burst in. If I was not in they would taken everything.

"I would have come home to nothing. I said 'I think you have got the wrong address?' This is 68.'

The bailiff then realised he had got the wrong number, apologised and left the property.

"I said 'don't I get more than a sorry?' but he was downright rude and belittling," he added.

"I thought it was a burglar. It is difficult for me to move.

"I am disabled. I have to use walking sticks or a wheelchair. It was frightening for someone to come into your house that you do not know.

"It was common sense. You should check the doors. It was a poor mistake. Imagine if I had come home to nothing."

A spokesman for Nottingham City Homes said: "We appreciate this would have been alarming for Mr Silverstone and we are very sorry for any distress it caused him.

"The error was made when the County Court bailiff arrived at the property to find Mr Silverstone’s door boarded up, saw no door number and believed that to be the right property.

"The bailiff entered the hall before immediately realising his mistake and apologised to Mr Silverstone before leaving the property.

"We have spoken to the County Court bailiffs to investigate how this happened and express our concerns - they have assured us this will not happen again."
