In his first public comments about his rumoured romance with Tammy Hembrow, AFL star Bailey Smith has confirmed his relationship status and revealed whether the Aussie influencer will be joining him at tonight’s Brownlow Medal Awards.
ICYMI, the genetically blessed couple have been at the centre of romance rumours since early last month, when they were spotted holding hands during an outing in the Gold Coast.
In the time since, there’s been Instagram soft launches, reactions from Hembrow’s ex Matt Zukowski and AFL CEO Andrew Dillon, and rumours of the pair making their red carpet debut at the AFL’s night of nights, slated for Melbourne’s Crown Palladium later today.
At the risk of bursting your bubble, however, Smith has now confirmed that Hembrow will not be on his arm at the Brownlows.
Rubbing salt in the wound, the Geelong Cats player also said he and Hembrow are “just mates”. Say it with me: WHAT THE HELL!
Smith addressed all the chatter during a recent radio interview on The Kyle & Jackie O Show. When asked whether he was bringing Hembrow to the Brownlows — at which he is a strong contender for the event’s top gong — Smith said no, because he “didn’t want to bore her with footy all night”.
“No, I’m not,” Smith said. “I didn’t want to bore her with footy all night. She’s not a big footy fan.”
You could argue that the Brownlows are equally about the wives and girlfriend and their red carpet looks (the gay man’s sport), but that sentiment was apparently shot down by AFL execs earlier this month.
In Hembrow’s place, Smith said he is bringing his jiu jitsu coach as his Brownlow plus-one, because “he’s one of my best mates”.
Smith’s confirmation of Hembrow’s absence naturally prompted a question about whether the pair are even together, to which Smith offered a phrase that will strike anyone who’s been hit with a dreaded friend-zone: “We’re just mates.”
“No, we’re just mates,” he said, before confirming he is in fact single and ready to mingle.
“I’m enjoying [being single],” Smith said, “but I am keen for a missus eventually.” Say it with me: STRIKE THE WORD “MISSUS” FROM YOUR VOCABULARY, STAT.
As for which party first initiated their romance (friendship? Business deal?), Smith revealed it was he who “slid in [Hembrow’s] inbox”, and he described the interaction as “low key”.
Smith’s comments seem to bring an end to a whirlwind romance that overran our timelines, but best believe I’ll still be judging his jiu jitsu coach’s red carpet look.
