Bailey Peacock-Farrell breaks silence on swapping Leeds United for even less football at Burnley

Waiting is what Bailey Peacock-Farrell would have done on either side of the Pennines in the first month of this season.

The Northern Ireland international was heading into 2019/20 as Kiko Casilla’s deputy at Leeds United, but now waits in the wings at Burnley as not second, but third choice stopper.

Many have questioned the logic of trading one bench for another, especially as the Premier League leap is negated by the extra body between Peacock-Farrell and the firing line.

"It was a jump I wasn't expecting to make so soon, but it came about and I couldn't turn it down," he told The Sunday Times this week.

"I'm really happy to be there. I'm enjoying the day in, day out training and working with two experienced and very good goalkeepers in front of me.

"Nick Pope has been called into the England squad and Joe Hart was England number one for a long time, won the Golden Glove in the Premier League and played a ridiculous amount of top flight games.

“I'll learn a lot from them and believe it is a place where I can grow."

Middlesbrough can claim Peacock-Farrell as one of their own academy products owing to his longer spell on Teesside, but Thorp Arch staff played a major part in the goalkeeper’s later development.

In the end, the 22-year-old made 41 senior appearances for the Whites and knows they were the club which gave him that first chance.

"I'll never forget Leeds. I was there for a long time and the club will always be special to me and close to my heart,” he said.
