The funeral of Bailey Gwynne, the Aberdeen teenager who died after being stabbed during his school lunch hour, will be held in private.

His family has placed a notice in a local newspaper explaining arrangements for the service, in which they also thanked the community for their support.

Police were called to Cults academy in the west of the city on 28 October after reports of a serious incident. Bailey was taken by ambulance to Aberdeen royal infirmary where he died from his injuries.

The notice read: “Following the sad loss of Bailey, aged 16 years, a private funeral will be held. Bailey’s family would like to thank the community for their kindness and support at this time.”

The 16-year-old lived with his mother, her partner and four half-brothers in the village of Maryculter, a few miles from the school.

Last Friday, a 16-year-old boy was committed to trial for the murder in a private hearing. The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, made no plea or declaration and was remanded after his appearance at Aberdeen sheriff court.

He will stand trial on charges of murder, carrying a knife or blade on school premises, and carrying an offensive weapon on school premises.

Pupils returned to the school last Monday for the first time since the fatal stabbing. They were greeted at the entrance by the headteacher, Anna Muirhead, and special assemblies were held to allow discussion of the incident and inform students of the support available to them.
