A 42-year-old man remains behind bars following a police investigation into the alleged sexual touching of a young girl.

State Crime Command detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad began investigating on Sunday after reports a girl, seven, was sexually touched by a man known to her.

Officers subsequently arrested a 42-year-old man from Ourimbah, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, about 2.45pm on Tuesday.

He was taken to Gosford police station where he was charged with two counts of intentionally sexually touching a child under the age of ten.

The 42-year-old was refused bail in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday. He did not enter a plea to the charges.

The man is next due to appear in Wyong Local Court in January.
