Bahrain has expressed full support for the military operation carried out by the US, UK and France on the Syrian regime following the “brutal” chemical attack on Douma in Eastern Ghouta.

“This military operation was necessary to protect civilians in all Syrian territory and to prevent the use of any prohibited weapons that would increase the frequency of violence and the deterioration of humanitarian conditions,” a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

According to General Joe Dunford, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, the strikes hit three targets related to Bashar al-Assad's chemical weapons program -- a scientific research center near Damascus, a weapons storage facility west of Homs and a third location that contained both a command post and an equipment storage facility in the same area.

They came in response to the use of chemical weapons in Douma last Saturday.

Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry called on the UN Security Council and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to investigate the use of chemical weapons in Eastern Ghouta.

It also stressed “the importance of concerted efforts to end the Syrian crisis and reach a political solution based on the principles of Geneva I and UN Security Council Resolution 2254, in a manner that preserves the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria."
